Mauritius

Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation, gained its independence in 1968 and later in 1992 became a Republic. Known as the star and key of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius’ geographical position affords the Ocean State one of the largest Exclusive Economic Zones in the world.

Mauritius with a reputed democratic political system where free and fair elections are held every 5 years further bolsters the already impressive track record of more than 3 decades of sustained economic growth. The Parliament of Mauritius is modelled after the Westministerial system of parliamentary democracy with the Prime Minster as the head of government. The National Assembly of Mauritius determines the functioning of various constitutional institutions of the country.

The Mauritian legal system is a unique hybrid legal system made up of French law, English law and Mauritian law elements. Mauritian courts adopt a fair and equitable approach in the dissemination of justice where the highest court of appeal is that of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Mauritius is further gaining a strong reputation as an arbitral centre in the region with the pro-arbitration stance adopted by the courts and the presence of recognised institutions such as the PCA, LCIA-MIAC and the MCCI-MARC.
